February MHLD RED (Race, Equity and Diversity) Talk
February 26, 2025 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
Drop-in Lunch & Learn to build on other recent race trainings and support you in your MHLD practice!
THIS PROGRAM QUALIFIES FOR 1 CLE ON THE MHLD TRIAL & APPEALS PANEL
Bring your lunch and come join your colleagues on MHLD staff and panel to talk informally and brainstorm about raising race in our cases. Do you believe that your client’s mental health treatment, admission to a facility or petition for commitment/guardianship is being impacted by racial bias?
This month, we will be joined by Dr. Itiel Dror, a neuroscientist, who specializes on the existence of expert bias and its impact on evaluations and opinions reached.
He will explain how we can educate the court about the way “bias blindspots” could result in deficient evaluations and inaccurate ultimate opinions about our clients.
Here are several articles that Dr. Dror provides if you have a chance to review (but not required)!
- The most consistent finding in forensic science is inconsistency
- Cognitive and Human Factors in Expert Decision Making
- A general approach for improving decision making as well as minimizing noise and bias: Linear Sequential Unmasking
With Dr. Dror’s expertise, we can also talk about how to tell your client’s story, develop strategy, draft cross and direct examinations, move to admit language from relevant studies and articles and make effective arguments to the court.
This is also a chance to case crunch your cases with your colleagues over lunch!
Come join us!
