COURTROOM PSYCHOLOGY

Annabelle Frazier

This session introduces participants to research-supported cognitive biases, group process distortions and stereotyping biases that may go unrecognized but impact case proceedings and outcomes. These psychological phenomena are described in the context of their influence on perceived case theory development, witness credibility, and judicial decision-making. During the session, a brief case scenario exemplifies each new concept introduced. For each scenario, participants are asked (as a large group) to identify the concept within the scenario, as well as brainstorm possible ways they might address the problem.

After the session participants will:

  • Understand the concept of research-supported cognitive biases, group process distortions, and stereotyping biases and how to identify such biases.
  • Understand the impact of these phenomena on their own perception of clients, proceedings, and case characteristics.
  • Understand the research-supported strategies for reducing each problem.
