This is the second session of a virtual three-part series that will help CAFL practitioners navigate zealously representing youth and young adults age 16 – 22. We heard from every breakout group in part one of this session that communicating with transition age youth clients is challenging and can affect zealous advocacy. This session will focus on how to communicate effectively, how to identify the client’s skills and needs and find resources to advocate for from DCF. The session will include: a presentation on adolescent brain development and working with transition age youth clients; a panel on client communication and how it may change as the client and their case change; holistic representation, supports and services; a breakout session on barriers to advocacy; and a conversation with a transition age youth and her parent on what worked and what did not work in her professional relationship with her lawyer.
