ACLUM Public Records Requests Training

October 19, 2021 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

This program is hosted by ACLU. Any questions or issues regarding this program should be directed there. ([email protected]). This event is being listed for informational purposes only. CPCS staff cannot assist with, or solve, registration issues.
We are writing to offer an opportunity to join the ACLU of Massachusetts on Tuesday, October 19, at 4 p.m., for a remote training on making, pursuing, and litigating requests under the Massachusetts Public Records Law.

This law is a critical tool to help people learn what their government is doing. ACLUM often sends public records requests to investigate discrete legal issues, to preserve access to a free and open government, or to aid in litigation efforts. We also receive many requests—more than we can handle ourselves—for help from people who want to submit their own public records requests, or have already done so without success. Consequently, we frequently have projects where we might need your assistance gathering records.

As part of this training, you’ll learn about:
• Crafting a request under the Massachusetts Public Records Law
• Following up with a public entity about a request
• Litigating a request when the public entity’s response is inadequate
• Evaluating and responding to the assertion of exemptions
