Groundbreaking Innovative Treatments for Treatment-Resistant Suicidal Ideation

This training provides MHLD attorneys with an overview of emerging, evidence-based treatments for individuals experiencing treatment-resistant suicidal ideation. Participants will explore how advances in psychiatric care including novel pharmacologic and neuromodulation therapies may affect legal decision-making in civil commitment, guardianship, and substituted judgment proceedings.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
- Identify emerging evidence-based treatments for treatment-resistant suicidal ideation and understand their potential role in reducing suicide risk and improving patient outcomes.
- Evaluate the legal, ethical, and constitutional considerations associated with innovative psychiatric treatments in civil commitment, guardianship, and substituted judgment proceedings.
- Apply current clinical knowledge to advocate effectively in court, collaborate with mental health professionals, and make informed legal recommendations that balance patient autonomy, public safety, and access to appropriate treatment.
