SUMMARY:After the 72 Training Series: Leveraging Foster Care Reviews for Effective Client Advocacy
DESCRIPTION:Have you questioned whether you really need to attend that foster care review? Is it really worth making the time in my busy schedule? The answer to both is YES! Foster care reviews are key opportunities to advocate for your client\, build on your theory of the case\, and\, perhaps most importantly\, provide your client a voice at the table in case planning. They can also be an important time to learn what is going on with your child client\, because we all know child’s counsel is the last to know everything. In this training\, participants will learn the mechanics of foster care reviews\, how to effectively prepare yourself and your client\, and how decisions made at the review affect the trajectory of the case. Participants will also learn how to actively advocate for clients before\, during\, and after the review and use information presented in hearing and trial preparation. Approved for 1.5 CAFL CLEs. \n  \nREGISTER HERE: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZEtceuoqD4oGtXvdtT7ZmDvSxvQrOxoclC3

SUMMARY:Monthly CAFL Race Equity Drop-In
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]As practitioners in the family regulation system\, there are many times we feel frustrated and beaten when facing the full force of the racist state. And at times\, even complicit in the system of unjust removals as court officers. We are obviously part of this legal system despite our fight to change the outcomes for our clients one case at a time. This June we hope to take a moment of introspection into our work\, cognizant of the harms of family separation\, of the larger family policing system\, and reconcile our roles and responsibilities to the community we represent. \nWe want to know how you deal with the feeling of complicity in a largely racist and unjust family regulation system. How do you counter this narrative to continue your work? Or do you do something else entirely? What do you suggest we do as individuals and collectively to better fight for positive changes in and outside of court? \nPlease come with your thoughts and suggestions or just to listen to a candid discussion that will hopefully leave us with efforts to maintain our zeal in challenging injustice. We will meet via zoom on Wednesday\, June 26\, 1-2pm. \nApproved for 1 CAFL CLE. \nRegister here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUvcuuhqz8rE9TYEqGfCOMpyJrJAwbxH9D5[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Taking the Sting out of Testifying: Preparing Your Parent Client to Testify
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Your client is nervous. Their children are on the line. Their trial testimony will be required if they want to reunify with their children. Thorough preparation of your client could make or break their testimony and the case. This webinar will help participants build a solid foundation for their relationship with a parent client. Using the strength of that relationship\, participants will then learn concrete steps for preparing a parent to testify at trial. SUMMARY:Understanding & Litigating the Harms of Child Removal Training (Part 2)
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nUnderstanding & Litigating the Harms of Child Removal\nBecause There’s No Place Like Home\n The involuntary separation of children from their parents is devastating for the whole family\, inevitably causing distinct and long-term harms to the children and to their parents. This two-part training will offer a deeper dive into these harms and explore what we can do to improve outcomes for our clients. \nPart 1: May 14\, 2024\, 2:00-4:00pm \n Thousands of children are separated from their families every year in the name of “child welfare.” In this session\, Professor Shanta Trivedi (author of “The Harm of Child Removal” and the forthcoming article “‘Am I Still a Parent?’ The Devastating Effects of Family Policing on Parents”) will examine the harms that children and parents experience in the family regulation system\, and discuss strategies to help practitioners identify\, prevent and/or mitigate these harms. You can learn more about Professor Trivedi here. Register here. \nPart 2: May 23\, 2024\, 2:00-4:00pm  \nCustody decisions aren’t just about the parents and their conduct; the court also must consider the harm to the child from removal\, family separation\, and placement in the foster system. Our judges don’t always agree\, though. In this session we will discuss the relevant legal requirements in Massachusetts\, share practice tips\, and introduce resources the working group has developed to help attorneys litigate the harms of removal. Register here. \n\nThis program is presented by The CAFL Harms of Removal Working Group. Each session is approved for 2 CAFL CLEs. Attendance at both sessions is encouraged but is not required. \n  \nNOTE: 4 CLE credit for each webinar for attorneys on each of the following panels: CAFL\, CAFL Appeals[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:CAFL's Issue Spotting Training
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Temporary Custody Hearing just ended. DCF has been awarded Temporary Custody. What do you do now? Identifying the potential issues in the case is a critical step for developing a comprehensive case plan. Join us for this zoom training designed to assist you in ferreting out the key issues in your cases. We start with a new\, completely original CAFL hypothetical. And it is packed with issues. Your homework is to read the hypothetical and watch a short video. Then join us on May 21 for the Zoom training. After a brief introduction\, we will break into small groups where we can unpack the issues presented in the hypothetical. When we rejoin the large group\, we will compare lists and discuss how to use this list in your case planning. \nLimited spots available! \nNOTE: 3 CLE credit for each webinar for attorneys on each of the following panels: CAFL\, CAFL Appeals. \nRegister here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZUlcu6orzwsHtEBf9TU3yceInugH57scVE9[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
