SUMMARY:New Developments in DNA and Rape Kit Analysis
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]This program is hosted by Central Middlesex County Bar Association. Any questions or issues regarding this program should be directed there. (Ellie Hertzberg (erh8@cornell.edu)\, Robyn Larsen (mdalawrobyn@yahoo.com )\, or Veronica Zolina (vzolina@verizon.net)). This event is being listed for informational purposes only. CPCS staff cannot assist with\, or solve\, registration issues. \nThe Central Middlesex County Bar Association invites you to attend our next CLE entitled: \n  \nNEW DEVELOPMENTS IN DNA AND RAPE KIT ANALYSIS \n(The ADAs have had this training.  Shouldn’t you?) \n  \nHistorically\, DNA comparisons were made based on the presence or absence of alleles only and the statistic was reported as an expected frequency of occurrence of that DNA profile.  But the forensic community is evolving to be able to consider all of the information present in a mixture\, not just the alleles that are present or absent. \nDue in part to the efforts made to eliminate the sexual assault kit backlog\, the MA State Police Criminology Unit is no longer routinely screening all sexual assault kit samples for sperm cells.  Instead\, a process known as Y-screening has been implemented which allows for the detection of male DNA in a sample prior to the DNA sample selection. \nOur speaker\, Jessica Hart\, will bring you up to date with the Crime Lab’s current DNA analysis practices. She spent 14 years as a forensic scientist at the State Police Lab in Maynard\, MA.  She left in 2022 and uses her training\, knowledge\, and experience to help the defense analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the discovery provided by the Commonwealth. \n  \nRegister for the class by emailing Ellie Hertzberg (erh8@cornell.edu)\, Robyn Larsen (mdalawrobyn@yahoo.com )\, or Veronica Zolina (vzolina@verizon.net).  Please include a phone number in the email so that we can contact you in case of any changes.  If you would like us to inform your county’s bar advocate program about your attendance\, please include your county. \n  \nTime:  Tuesday\, November 7\, 2023 \n4:30 PM – 6:30PM \n  \nPlace: Concord District Court\, 305 Walden St. \n  \nApproved for 2 CLE credits for the criminal trial\, juvenile\, and appellate panels. \n  \nCost: $20 (Pay at the door.  Cash or check payable to CMCBA.) \n [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

SUMMARY:Working with clients who are Deaf and hard of hearing and their families: a presentation by the Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (MCDHH)
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]In Massachusetts and elsewhere in the United States\, access to the courts and legal services by Deaf and hard of hearing individuals remains problematic. This happens for a variety of reasons – insufficient numbers of legal American Sign Language interpreters\, Certified Deaf Interpreters (CDI) and Communication Access Realtime Translation (CART) providers. \nAdditionally\, knowledge related to the provision of appropriate communication access services remains elusive\, as does the proper implementation of such services across a wide spectrum of legal and social services. \nThis presentation by MCDHH will help you to understand what appropriate communication access is; what cultural\, communicative\, procedural and technical considerations to take into account when working with Deaf and hard of hearing individuals and families\, and how MCDHH staff can work with you to ensure positive outcomes for our constituency. \nOrganizer: Deborah Cassell\, CAFL Resource Attorney (Barnstable County)\, deborahcassell_atty@hotmail.com \nZoom link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82494978446?pwd=ZGNDc3hDK2tTS0J0dDZLZktJRDFGdz09 \nCLE: 2 CAFL[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
