SUMMARY:MCLE: 8th Annual Conference 2022 - Appellate Practice
DESCRIPTION:This program is hosted by the organizer listed below. Any questions or issues regarding this program should be directed there. This event is being listed for informational purposes only. CPCS staff cannot assist with\, or solve\, registration issues.\nThe premier yearly event for appellate practitioners\, MCLE’s 8th Annual Appellate Practice Conference 2022 features a concentrated focus on the appellate process. This year\, the Conference provides a variety of perspectives to help attorneys become better appellate litigators. For a fresh perspective\, the newest members of the state and federal appellate courts in Massachusetts discuss their backgrounds and how they are settling into their new roles. For a comparative perspective\, Justices Kafker\, Cypher\, and Wendlandt reflect upon their experiences serving on both the Supreme Judicial Court (SJC) and the Massachusetts Appeals Court—as we observe an especially significant milestone in marking the 50th anniversary of the Appeals Court. \nFor the practitioner’s perspective\, the current and original State Solicitors provide practical advice on brief writing\, reviewing briefs written by others\, and preparing for and delivering oral argument\, among other topics. For a change in viewpoint\, members of the SJC’s Standing Committee on the Rules of Appellate Procedure discuss recent rule changes. The Conference also features behind-the-scenes insight from the former Chief Staff Counsel to the SJC on the evolution of the SJC’s docket and from state and federal appellate court clerks on recent developments in court operations. \nThis outstanding Conference is essential for both new and experienced appellate litigators to strengthen their skills\, hear from the judiciary\, learn from experts\, and network with colleagues. Take advantage of this valuable opportunity to become a more effective appellate lawyer. \nhttps://www.mcle.org/

SUMMARY:Substance Use Disorders & Treatment
DESCRIPTION:The Norfolk County Juvenile Court is pleased to host an educational program concerning substance disorders and treatment on THURSDAY\, JANUARY 12\, 2023\, from 2PM to 4PM at our Dedham session located at 55 Allied Drive. The program will be offered in-person and online via Zoom.\nThe presenters are Dr. Michael Hamrock and Ryan Morgan. Dr. Hamrock is a primary care and addiction medicine physician at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center and Carney Hospital. Mr. Morgan is the principal/director of Independence Academy\, a recovery high school. \nTrial Court personnel\, probation\, court clinicians\, Department of Children and Families\, CPCS and CAFL staff attorneys and social workers\, private bar\, assistant district attorneys\, and other professionals and agency representatives are invited and encouraged to attend. This program is not limited to those who work in Norfolk County; CPCS staff and private bar attorneys from other counties are welcome. \n  \nTopics to be covered: \n  \nUnderstanding the Brain Disease of Addiction \nThe presentation by Dr. Hamrock will help raise the awareness of the unique risk factors for opiate use disorders and their impact on hijacking specific brain circuit pathways that leads to addiction. Participants will gain a better understanding of the therapeutic modalities used in Medication Assisted Treatment programs to optimally manage those afflicted with addictions. A review of effective prevention and intervention strategies that help target the key risk factors for opiate use disorders will be highlighted. A discussion on novel therapeutic approaches that offer real hope and a second chance to those afflicted with substance use disorders and their associated harmful and illicit behaviors will also be undertaken. \n  \nRedefining Recovery: A growth and development model to fight addiction \nThe presentation by Mr. Morgan will address why some adolescents struggle with substances more than others? What does “typical” adolescent substance use look like? Why have adolescent residential treatment facilities in MA closed? Independence Academy has created a growth and development model grounded in the concept of Adolescent Recovery Capital. We believe that there are 13 domains that are critical to the healthy growth and development of adolescents. We believe that when an adolescent forms an awareness of each of the domains and how the domains are represented in their own life\, that we can then build clarity around their individual needs and engage them in a personalized approach to the cultivation and development of capital through meaningful action. This presentation will highlight the key aspects of our model and show how the 13 domains are inextricably connected. Participants will gain a better understanding of the developmentally appropriate ways to address adolescent substance use so that it is less likely to become a lifelong addiction or dependence issue. \n  \nThere will be a “Q and A” session with the speakers. The virtual session will begin promptly\, and it is recommended you sign in five minutes ahead of the start time. \n  \nPlease RSVP to keith.healey@jud.state.ma.us at your earliest convenience and indicate whether you plan to attend in-person or via Zoom. If you have any questions\, please contact Keith Healy by email or by phone at 781-320-1248. \nZoom: https://www.zoomgov.com/j/1619119155?pwd=UDU4Zm15QkZzbTdKZlZLeHZGZitoQT09

SUMMARY:SLL LEGAL WRITING SEMINAR: WITH SOME NOT-SO-TYPICAL TOPICS
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nCPCS approved 2.5 CLE hours for the SORB and SDP Hearings\, Post-Conviction\, Adult Criminal Trial\, CAFL\, YAD\, YAD Appeals\, and Mental Health panels.\nKenneth Bresler\, Administrative Magistrate\, Division of Administrative Law Appeals (DALA) \nDate & Time: Wednesday\, March 13\, 2024 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.\nProgram Fee: $65 \n  \n•          You probably know to use the active voice in your writing. But how do you spot the passive voice? When is OK to use the passive voice? \n•          Use one idea per sentence – generally\, that is. \n•          Avoid nominalizations (“have knowledge of\,” “have need of\,” “make use of”). \n•          Ditch the synonyms. Pick one word and stick with it. \n•          Avoid common redundancies (“prior planning\,” “future predictions”). \n•          Use “however” properly.  (Many educated people misuse it.) \n•          Is it “disinterested” or “uninterested”? \n•          Is it “flaunt” or “flout”? (Some courts get it wrong.) \n•          Is it “just deserts” or “just desserts”? (You won’t get this wrong ever.) \n•          Why there ain’t no such thing as “12:00 a.m.” \n•          Avoid the ambiguity of “12:00 midnight.” \nAn experienced lawyer\, writer\, editor\, and writing coach\, Kenneth Bresler has successfully presented these topics to long-practicing lawyers and law students alike. Consider sending your interns and summer associates as part of your summer program. This 2.5 hour webinar includes some easy hands-on\, correct-your-own writing exercises. \nOnline registration is encouraged. For assistance\, questions on group discounts\, accommodations requests\, special billing\, program content\, out-of-state CLE credits\, and general contact CLE Coordinator\,  Michael Saporito by email at msaporito@socialaw.com. Registrations accepted in order of receipt. Registration fees are non-refundable. Most Social Law Library CLE events are recorded and recordings are sent to all who are registered.
