She later completed her doctorate in nursing practice (DNP) at Rush University. Currently\, Dr Rowlands is a practicing nurse practitioner at Genesis Health Care and an Associate Clinical Professor at UMass Boston. She has worked in geriatrics for over 20 years with clinical expertise in the care of the older adult including issues around end of life\, elder abuse\, and complex care management. Ms. Rowlands is a CPCS vendor.  \n Dr Rowlands will conduct an educational session on the clinical presentation and diagnosis of the various forms of dementia as well as cognitive impairment. She will explain how such conditions could interfere with a person’s ability to consent for elder services. In particular\, she will explain how environmental variables in the community\, risk factors and protective factors impact an older adult’s ability to meaningfully consent to an intervention by elder services. Participants will be provided with the necessary clinical information to zealously represent to clients in elder abuse cases. There will be 15 minutes for questions after the presentation. \n  \nOverview of Elder Protective Services: Eddie Murphy\, Protective Services Program Manager:  Noon-1:00 pm \n Presenter\, Eddie Murphy currently works for Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands as the Protective Services Program Manager. For the last 15 years\, prior to his current position\, he worked in several roles including Protective Services Worker\, Protective Services Supervisor\, and Nutrition Program Manager. He formerly worked in he worked in Adult Foster Care and Probation prior to joining ESCCI.  \nMr. Murphy will give a presentation on the various programs and services available at Elder Services and in particular the role of the Protective Services Program. He will explain the types of elder abuse cases that the agency investigates from intake to resolution of the case. Specifically\, he will explain the role of the agency in cases that involve litigation including but not limited to guardianship and conservatorship petitions and restraining orders. The participants will benefit from learning about the agency in general and in particular its role as   petitioner in the cases in which they may be appointed as Respondent’s Counsel. DESCRIPTION:We’re Back: Selecting a Jury\nWe went a while without selecting juries so the training department has come up with a three-part series on jury selection so that as we start up again we can pick a jury better than ever before.  The first  two parts are being offered in January as remote trainings and are open for registration. SUMMARY:Batson and Carter: Stopping Racism and Homophobia in Jury Selection
DESCRIPTION:We’re Back: Selecting a Jury\nWe went a while without selecting juries so the training department has come up with a three-part series on jury selection so that as we start up again we can pick a jury better than ever before.  The first  two parts are being offered in January as remote trainings and are open for registration. Each session is $10.00 to attend.  The third part will be in person offered in multiple locations – details about part 3 will be forthcoming when we know more about when in person trainings of this nature can happen. \nDays 1 and 2 have limited enrollment due to including small groups so please sign up as soon as you know you can attend and let us know in advance if you need to cancel so that we can fill your spot.  It is recommended that you attend all three days as day 1 will help inform day 2\, but please sign up for them independently. \nDay 1 – Jan 11 2pm-4pm\, Deselection: Strategic Jury Selection (please see January 11 calendar posting for day one registration details) \nDay 2 – Jan 18\, 2pm-4pm\, Batson and Carter: Stopping Racism and Homophobia  \nREGISTRATION LINK HERE\n \nGet a refresher on the law around stopping racism\, homophobia\, etc. in jury selection and the recent changes and restructuring of the law in this area.  Then you and your small group will have time to practice making objections in actual scenarios where this will come up. \n  \nDay 3 – Practicing Panel Voir Dire – TBD 2022 \nYou can’t sign up yet but we look forward to practicing panel voir dire with you in person! \n  \nEACH SESSION QUALIFIES FOR 2 CLE ON THE FOLLOWING CPCS PANELS:  Adult Criminal\, Criminal Appeals\, YAD\, YAD Appeals and SDP \n

SUMMARY:How to File a Discrimination Complaint with the HHS Office of Civil Rights
DESCRIPTION:Important federal laws protect our clients from discrimination. The ADA and Section 504 prohibit discrimination based on disability\, while Title VI prohibits discrimination based on race\, color and national origin.  Yet DCF routinely fails to use interpreters when communicating with our LEP and deaf and hard of hearing clients\, does not translate important documents such as action plans and foster care review reports\, and lacks appropriate services for individuals with disabilities and those who are limited English proficient.  Informal advocacy and motion practice are important tools to challenge discrimination and protect our clients’ rights.  But there is another effective tool you can add to your litigation toolbox.  Attorney Timothy Stark\, Investigator with the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Civil Rights (OCR)\, will provide a review of federal anti-discrimination laws and walk you through the steps to file a complaint.  OCR enforces federal civil rights laws which prohibit discrimination in the delivery of health and human services based on race\, color\, national origin\, disability\, age\, sex\, and religion.  You will also hear from your CAFL colleagues about their experiences filing complaints with OCR. \n[Register Here]
