SUMMARY:Combatting the Myths of the Impact of Drug Use During Pregnancy: Representing our Pregnant Clients
DESCRIPTION:Criminal Defense Trainers of the CPCS Training Department Webinar SeriesPresents:\nCombatting the Myths of the Impact of Drug Use During Pregnancy: Representing our Pregnant Clients\nWednesday\, April 15\, 2020\, 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm\nAccording to our recent survey\, 86% of participating defense attorneys have represented a pregnant client in the criminal justice system\, with almost 50% reporting that it happens yearly. Has your pregnant client been accused of using opioids? What about prescription medications that seem dangerous to her pregnancy? Has probation ever recommended\, or has a judge ever ordered\, your pregnant client to test negative for substances while on pre-trial release or probation? Or has your pregnant client been committed to a substance abuse treatment facility to keep her from taking substances? This webinar is designed to teach you some basic science and medicine about pregnancy and substances. The “common sense” beliefs that laypeople have about drugs and pregnancy are often wrong…and dangerous to our clients. The purpose of this webinar is to raise your awareness so that you can combat the myths in the courtroom and zealously represent your pregnant clients. \nTopics covered include: \n\nWhat is addiction?\n What do most women with opioid use disorder have in common?\nWhat does medicine tell us about which drugs are safe for pregnancy?\nHow common is medication use among pregnant women and for what types of health problems?\nShould pregnant women with opioid use disorder go “cold turkey”? Should they have medicallysupervised\nwithdrawal?\nAre methadone or suboxone dangerous during pregnancy?\nWhat do studies show about opioid-exposed infants?\nWhat do respected medical groups think about criminal and civil liability for drug use during pregnancy?\nWhat services are jails required to provide to pregnant inmates?\nWhen and how are pregnant inmates permitted to be in restraints?\n\n1 CLE for Criminal Panel\, Criminal Appeals\, YAD & MH \nTo Register: https://attendee.gototraining.com/r/6547368948213284609\nAfter registering you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the training.
