Preference will be given to attorneys who submit applications by August 9 and who commit to accepting cases in central and western Massachusetts\, where we currently have an attorney shortage. The agency actively seeks to diversify its private attorney panel membership. \nThe training will be a mix of live on-line sessions and substantial self-directed learning.  The training will begin with an orientation via Zoom on Thursday\, September 9 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM. DESCRIPTION:CPCS Fall 2021 Training to Represent People Facing Civil Commitment and Related Forced Medication Petitions\nThe Mental Health Litigation Division (MHLD) of the Committee for Public Counsel Services is seeking qualified attorneys to represent clients in civil commitment and forced medication cases in District and Boston Municipal Courts. In Massachusetts\, people experiencing psychiatric distress can be involuntarily detained at psychiatric facilities\, committed for up to six months or a year\, and treated with anti-psychotic medications against their wishes. These substantial deprivations of liberty entitle people to court-appointed counsel to ensure that all their rights under the law are protected. Civil commitment cases offer frequent and fast-paced litigation experience\, client contact\, and the satisfaction of providing zealous client-centered advocacy to some of the most misjudged and undervalued clients in the Commonwealth. \nAdmission to the MHLD trial panel is by application only. All attorneys who accept CPCS assignments are required to maintain professional liability insurance. While the ICPC regulations are the same in each state and territory\, the focus and application of each can be different. DESCRIPTION:RSVP to Deb (dfreitas@freitas-law.com) or Cris (cfreitas@freitas-law.com) so that we can have a headcount for ice cream.\nSee flyer for more information including parking and directions. Lowell Black History CLE Flyer Sept 23 Updated \nThe CLE\, “Linking the Past to Our Advocacy: Lessons from Lowell’s Black History Trail” will be held outdoors–rain or shine– during lunchtime (since the trail runs very close to the Lowell Justice Center) and ends at our office for an ice cream social/debrief. \nWe’ll be walking the entire Lowell Black History Trail which consists of 16 pop-up markers throughout downtown Lowell. Feel free to bring a mask (or not) and socially distance (or not) during the walk–no judging\, just walking. We’ll reflect on each of the markers and will have a few opportunities to discuss how lessons from the past can help us better advocate for our clients. At certain markers\, they’ll be a chance to win *really cool* (legal term) prizes for participation in the discussion! The agency actively seeks to diversify its private attorney panel membership. \nThe training will be a mix of live on-line sessions and substantial self-directed learning.  The training will begin with an orientation via Zoom on Thursday\, September 9 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM. In recent years\, he has travelled the country speaking hard truths about race in America. “Our history\,” he tells audiences\, “has been stolen from us.” Weaving heartbreak\, humor\, passion\, and rage\, Robinson takes us through this stolen history\, showing us how the legacy of slavery and U.S. imperialism impacts every aspect of our society – from 1619 through the present. \nNot only is it time for all Americans to reckon with the true history of racial oppression in this country\, but also to understand its impact on today. Robinson’s presentation aims to help us do just that. From the historical connection of slave patrols to local police departments\, through the massacres of communities of freed slaves\, to the fact that the essential elements of the practice of modern day slavery continued long after the Civil War\, Robinson challenges us to think about where we started as a country\, where we are\, and where we want to end up. His words lay bare an all-but-forgotten past\, as well as our shared responsibility to create a better country in our lifetimes. \nThere is a direct line from the values of white supremacy held by the people who founded America to present day America\, and Robinson’s presentation demonstrates how those values and resulting laws have led us to our current circumstances. When people reflect on police violence today few people see the direct connection between laws on police use of force and laws passed in the 1600’s making it clear that if a slave was killed while resisting a master\, no crime had been committed. People are unaware of the connection between slave patrols and modern-day police departments. These kinds of connections are critical to understanding that the devaluation of Black lives today can be traced to historic examples of devaluation that continue unbroken throughout American history and especially the criminal justice system. \nThe history Robinson imparts is not easy. It is not comfortable. But it is necessary. In the end\, Robinson’s words are a call to arms.
