SUMMARY:Issue Spotting Part One of “After the TCH”
DESCRIPTION:The Temporary Custody Hearing just ended.  DCF has been awarded Temporary Custody.  What do you do now?  Identifying the potential issues in the case is a critical step for developing a comprehensive case plan.  Join us for this zoom training designed to assist you in ferreting out the key issues in your cases.  We start with a new\, completely original CAFL hypothetical.  And it is packed with issues.  Your homework is to read the hypothetical and watch a short video.  Then join us on May 23rd for the zoom training.  After a brief introduction\, we will break into small groups where we can unpack the issues presented in the hypothetical.  When we rejoin the large group\, we will compare lists and discuss how to use this list in your case planning.\nThis is the first training in the “After the TCH” series.  It will be followed later in the year with a training entitled “What to Do After the 72”.   CAFL hopes to add to the series as time permits. \nREGISTER HERE: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZwpf-ygqzstE9Yzpzr8qc0offyY-RDgAvhn \n3 CLEs

SUMMARY:Dorothy Roberts: "How the Family Policing System Endangers Survivors and Their Children"
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Jane Doe Inc.\, the MA Coalition Against Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence. \n“Children are taken on grounds of neglect where there isn’t any evidence of severe abuse\,” said Roberts\, the author of Torn Apart: How the Child Welfare System Destroys Black Families – and How Abolition Can Build a Safer World. “We could imagine a better way of dealing with the families’ and the children’s needs without resorting to this traumatic intervention of seizing children. We shouldn’t think of them as aberrant cases.” \nHow are adult and child survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence\, especially BIPOC survivors\, impacted by what we call the child welfare system? How is the family policing system connected to sexual violence and the trauma to prison pipeline?  \nMany survivors become entangled into the child welfare/family policing system in the course of their daily lives – when accessing education\, housing\, health care\, services for survivors of SA/DV and so much more. What is our role as anti-violence survivor-centered advocates in this? How can we continue to support survivors and their families when state agencies become barriers\, tools of surveillance\, and sites of increased oppression and risk of experiencing violence? \nJoin us for a virtual talk with Professor Dorothy E Roberts who will explore these tensions and provide insight in how we can continue to support survivors and their families. \nASL & CART will be provided. Please request any other accommodation needs in your registration.\nThis session will be recorded; HOWEVER\, it will only be accessible with a protected link for a year. \nAbout Dorothy Roberts: \nDorothy Roberts is the 14th Penn Integrates Knowledge Professor and George A. Weiss University Professor of Law & Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania\, with joint appointments in the Departments of Africana Studies and Sociology and the Law School\, where she is the inaugural Raymond Pace and Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander Professor of Civil Rights. She is also the founding director of the Penn Program on Race\, Science\, and Society. An internationally recognized scholar\, public intellectual\, and social justice advocate\, she has written and lectured extensively on race\, gender\, and class inequities in U.S. institutions and has been a leader in transforming public thinking and policy on reproductive freedom\, child welfare\, and bioethics. \nShe is the author of “Killing the Black Body: Race\, Reproduction\, and the Meaning of Liberty” (Pantheon\, 1997/Vintage\, 2017)\, “Shattered Bonds: The Color of Child Welfare” (Basic Books\, 2001)\, “Fatal Invention: How Science\, Politics\, and Big Business Re-create Race in the Twenty-First Century “(The New Press\, 2011)\, and “Torn Apart: How the Child Welfare System Destroys Black Families—and How Abolition Can Build a Safer World” (Basic Books\, 2022)\, as well as more than 100 articles and book chapters\, including “Race” in the 1619 Project book. \nRecent recognitions of her work include 2022 election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences; 2022 Juvenile Law Center Leadership Prize; 2019 Honorary Doctor of Law Degree\, Rutgers University-Newark; 2019 New Voices for Reproductive Justice Voice of Vision Award; 2017 election to the National Academy of Medicine; 2016 Society of Family Planning Lifetime Achievement Award; 2015 American Psychiatric Association Solomon Carter Fuller Award. SUMMARY:Adulting for Lawyers: Crushing that Awkward Phase when you Represent Emerging Adults\, Part II – Effective Communication and Holistic Representation and Advocacy
DESCRIPTION:This is the second session of a virtual three-part series that will help CAFL practitioners navigate zealously representing youth and young adults age 16 – 22. We heard from every breakout group in part one of this session that communicating with transition age youth clients is challenging and can affect zealous advocacy. This session will focus on how to communicate effectively\, how to identify the client’s skills and needs and find resources to advocate for from DCF. The session will include: a presentation on adolescent brain development and working with transition age youth clients; a panel on client communication and how it may change as the client and their case change; holistic representation\, supports and services; a breakout session on barriers to advocacy; and a conversation with a transition age youth and her parent on what worked and what did not work in her professional relationship with her lawyer. Approved for 3 CAFL CLEs.Register HERE!
