SUMMARY:Linking the Past to Our Advocacy: Lessons from Lowell's Black History Trail
DESCRIPTION:Approved for 1.5 hours of CAFL\, YAD\, and Adult Criminal CLE\nRSVP to Deb (dfreitas@freitas-law.com) or Cris (cfreitas@freitas-law.com) so that we can have a headcount for ice cream. \nSee attached flyer for more information including parking and directions. Lowell Black History CLE Flyer Sept 23 Updated \nThe CLE\, “Linking the Past to Our Advocacy: Lessons from Lowell’s Black History Trail” will be held outdoors–rain or shine– during lunchtime (since the trail runs very close to the Lowell Justice Center) and ends at our office for an ice cream social/debrief. \nWe’ll be walking the entire Lowell Black History Trail which consists of 16 pop-up markers throughout downtown Lowell. Feel free to bring a mask (or not) and socially distance (or not) during the walk–no judging\, just walking. We’ll reflect on each of the markers and will have a few opportunities to discuss how lessons from the past can help us better advocate for our clients. At certain markers\, they’ll be a chance to win *really cool* (legal term) prizes for participation in the discussion! The CLE will end at Freitas & Freitas\, LLP\, 256 Middlesex Street\, for a free ice cream social (individually packaged\, of course). Grab free water and a cool summer treat to take back with you to court\, eat outside\, or enjoy in the air conditioning with colleagues! Check out the attached flyer for more details and parking tips. \nBONUS: In our loop back for the ice cream social\, we’ll also be admiring the Black History Art Walk banners hanging on the street lamps on Middlesex Street from the RMV garage up to the Courthouse.

SUMMARY:Legal Services of New Jersey Justice Series Substance Use in the Child Welfare System
DESCRIPTION:This program is hosted by the LSNJ. Any questions or issues regarding this program should be directed there. This event is being listed for informational purposes only. CPCS staff cannot assist with\, or solve\, registration issues.\n\n\n\nJoin us as we explore substance use in the child welfare system\, the stereotypes and\nconfusion. The webinar focuses on ways removals can be prevented by supporting parents with substance use disorders\, and the need for a nationwide culture shift to prevent removals. \nWe’ll also discuss the Adoption and Safe Families Act (ASFA)\, which requires states to file a termination of parental rights (TPR) petition for any child who has remained in foster care for 15 of the previous 22 months. ASFA presents major challenges to parents suffering from substance use disorders. Due to limited treatment programs and services\, they face delays in completing their case plans within the ASFA timeline. \n[Informational Flyer]

SUMMARY:What’s Sex Got to Do with Hope\, Healing\, and Resilience? Healthy Sexual Development to Improve Outcomes for Youth in Foster Care
DESCRIPTION:This program is hosted by the RHEP. Any questions or issues regarding this program should be directed there. This event is being listed for informational purposes only. CPCS staff cannot assist with\, or solve\, registration issues.\n\n\n\nNo matter what sector you come from – education\, workforce\, housing\, transportation\, child welfare\, health\, or advocacy –  knowing how to support the healthy sexual development of young people is important in supporting them. Sexual and reproductive health intersects with and influences all aspects of the life of a young person in foster care\, including their overall social-emotional wellbeing. \nAs in prior conferences\, the 2021 Reproductive Health Equity Project (RHEP) conference will include sessions in three areas: Head\, Heart\, and Hands. The Head\, Heart and Hands framework was developed by Just Communities for talking about and taking action on equity. \n“Head” Sessions: Attendees will learn the current data\, law\, and policy behind sexual and reproductive health for youth in foster care. \n“Hands” Sessions: Attendees will hear about exciting new sexual health education and health services that are tailored to youth in foster care and get concrete tools to support the healthy sexual development\, bodily autonomy\, and decision-making of the young people with whom they work. \n“Heart” Sessions: Attendees will be offered the opportunity to think about and re-envision traditional narratives about what it means to support young people’s healthy sexual development and family construction. The expert perspectives of young people with lived experience in the foster care system will be centered and highlighted throughout. \nAnd for 2021\, we introduce “Hope”: This year\, RHEP will take the Head\, Heart\, and Hands framework one step further and highlight throughout the day how ‘Hope’  plays a crucial role in young people’s resilience and aspirational healing journeys. Concepts\, practices\, and opportunities for healing will be interwoven throughout the day. \nJoin us on August 5th to understand and receive tools to empower youth in foster care to make informed decisions about their bodies\, relationships\, and reproductive lives and futures. \nCertificates of completion provided.

During the presentation\, we will flag critical points of overlap with other practice areas to watch out for. A brief Q & A will follow. Both sessions will be recorded and made available on My Gideon. \n\nYou will identify how people enter the mental health system:\n\nSectioning process;\nHow and for whom temporary & permanent guardianship petitions arise;\n\n\nYou will be able to describe how the Respondents/clients facing civil commitment and forced medication face unique challenges in their litigation;\nYou will understand how historically guardianship cases have not been fully litigated but how this is changing in ways applicable to your practice areas;\nYou will recognize that zealous advocacy is as critical in guardianship cases as in commitment cases because of the fundamental rights at issue and how temporary/emergency guardianships often become permanent deprivations of liberty.\n\n**Please register in advance for the sessions with the links above and you will subsequently receive a confirmation email to join.

SUMMARY:NCLER: What it Takes to Age in Place: Bringing Housing and Home & Community-Based Services (HCBS) Together
DESCRIPTION:This program is hosted by National Center on Law and Elder Rights (NCLER). Any questions or issues regarding this program should be directed there (ncler@acl.hhs.gov). This event is being listed for informational purposes only. CPCS staff cannot assist with\, or solve\, registration issues. \n  \nFree Webinar: \n What it Takes to Age in Place: Bringing Housing and Home & Community-Based Services (HCBS) Together\nWhen: Thursday\, June 17\, 2021\, at 2:00-3:00 E.T. \nMost people want to age in place and stay near their friends and family and in their community. This ideal can become complicated when housing becomes unstable or unaffordable\, or when supportive services are not available in the home and community. This training will explore the intersection of health and housing to support aging in place. It will provide information about Medicaid Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS)\, as well as what housing-related services can be funded through Medicaid. \nParticipants will: \n1.   Understand the connection between health and housing; \n2.   Learn the different ways that Medicaid can fund HCBS to keep people in their homes or create housing for people experiencing homelessness; and \n3.   Hear about examples of different community models that have integrated housing and health care to support housing stability\, including for previously homeless older adults. \nPresenters: \n·        Patti Prunhuber\, Senior Housing Staff Attorney\, Justice in Aging \n·        Claire Ramsey\, Senior Health Staff Attorney\, Justice in Aging \nClosed captioning will be available on this webcast. A link with access to the captions will be shared through GoToWebinar’s chat box shortly before the webcast start time. \nThis training will be presented in a WEBCAST format to accommodate more participants. Due to the high volume of participants\, computer audio will be the only option to listen to the presentation. No telephone call-in number will be provided. Please plan accordingly. Thank you. \nThis webcast will be recorded and available on our website shortly after the presentation. The recording and training materials will also be emailed to all registrants within a few days after the training. \nThe webcast will take place on Thursday\, June 17\, 2021\, at 2:00 p.m. ET and will run for one hour.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Combatting the Myths of the Impact of Drug Use During Pregnancy: Representing our Pregnant Clients
DESCRIPTION:Criminal Defense Trainers of the CPCS Training Department Webinar SeriesPresents:\nCombatting the Myths of the Impact of Drug Use During Pregnancy: Representing our Pregnant Clients\nWednesday\, April 15\, 2020\, 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm\nAccording to our recent survey\, 86% of participating defense attorneys have represented a pregnant client in the criminal justice system\, with almost 50% reporting that it happens yearly. Has your pregnant client been accused of using opioids? What about prescription medications that seem dangerous to her pregnancy? Has probation ever recommended\, or has a judge ever ordered\, your pregnant client to test negative for substances while on pre-trial release or probation? Or has your pregnant client been committed to a substance abuse treatment facility to keep her from taking substances? This webinar is designed to teach you some basic science and medicine about pregnancy and substances. The “common sense” beliefs that laypeople have about drugs and pregnancy are often wrong…and dangerous to our clients. The purpose of this webinar is to raise your awareness so that you can combat the myths in the courtroom and zealously represent your pregnant clients. \nTopics covered include: \n\nWhat is addiction?\n What do most women with opioid use disorder have in common?\nWhat does medicine tell us about which drugs are safe for pregnancy?\nHow common is medication use among pregnant women and for what types of health problems?\nShould pregnant women with opioid use disorder go “cold turkey”? Should they have medicallysupervised\nwithdrawal?\nAre methadone or suboxone dangerous during pregnancy?\nWhat do studies show about opioid-exposed infants?\nWhat do respected medical groups think about criminal and civil liability for drug use during pregnancy?\nWhat services are jails required to provide to pregnant inmates?\nWhen and how are pregnant inmates permitted to be in restraints?\n\n1 CLE for Criminal Panel\, Criminal Appeals\, YAD & MH \nTo Register: https://attendee.gototraining.com/r/6547368948213284609\nAfter registering you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the training.
