SUMMARY:NCLER Promoting Autonomy for Older Adults and Adults with Disabilities through Decisional and Other Supports
DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Everyone needs a little support now and then. For some older adults and adults with disabilities\, getting the support they need can be critical to maintaining their independence and self-determination. The training will explore strategies for identifying and implementing decisional and other supports for adults who might need assistance in particular areas\, and will discuss how advocates who work with adults can\, through the thoughtful implementation of well-crafted supports\, maximize their client’s autonomy while minimizing the intrusion on decision-making authority. This training will look at the broad range of support mechanisms and strategies available—formal and informal\, legal and nonlegal— including: \n\nSupported decision-making;\nInformal supports\, like family\, friends\, neighbors\, and community and religious organizations;\nSocial supports\, including day programs\, housekeeping services\, congregate or delivered meals\, and transportation services;\nFinancial supports\, such as automated banking\, restricted debit/credit cards\, joint bank accounts\, representative payees\, powers of attorney\, and trusts; and\nHealthcare supports\, like virtual electronic monitoring\, decision-making proxies\, and powers of attorney.\n\nPresenters will also provide clarifying examples to demonstrate how you can effectively counsel clients to guide them through selecting the appropriate supports and their trusted supporters. \nPresenters: \n\nAllison Cohen Hall\, PhD\, Institute for Community Inclusion\, University of Massachusetts Boston\nJim Berchtold\, Esq.\, Justice in Aging\n\nCapacity for this session is limited to 3\,000 participants\, and all participants will have the option of accessing audio through the computer or by phone. DESCRIPTION:[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] \nExclusively for Lawyers\, Law Students\, Judges\, and Other Legal Professionals in Massachusetts\nAmerica is a cultural and ethnic mosaic and within these cultures\, mental health/substance abuse challenges and mental health treatments can be viewed quite differently. \nCultural stigma\, understanding symptoms\, community support and resources are just a few examples where culture can impact our mental health and how we seek out help. \nJoin us on November 14th from 4 pm to 5:30 pm via zoom and hear from our diverse panelists talk about the role that culture plays in recognizing a mental health/substance use challenge and how they started on their journey to recovery. \nWe will also discuss solutions to overcome these cultural barriers and other roadblocks. \nREGISTER HERE \nThis panel is moderated by Dr. Charmain Jackman\, an award-winning licensed psychologist who speaks about mental and emotional wellbeing related topics which includes mental health stigma in communities of color. \nThis program is hosted by LCL.
