DESCRIPTION:Barnstable\, Plymouth\, and Bristol Counties MHLD Regional Coordinator Virtual Training Via Zoom 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM on December 16\, 2021\n Session One: Clinical Presentations of Dementia and Cognitive Impairment That Impact and Elder’s Ability to Consent to Elder Services \n1 CLE Credit \n Session Two: Overview of the Elder Protective Services Program at Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands \n 1CLE Credit \nAGENDA \nClinical Presentations of Dementia and Cognitive Impairment: 11.00 am-Noon \n Presenter\, Beth Rowlands\, DNP\, GNP-BC graduated with her BSN from the University of Rochester and then went on for the MSN at UMass Lowell. She later completed her doctorate in nursing practice (DNP) at Rush University. Currently\, Dr Rowlands is a practicing nurse practitioner at Genesis Health Care and an Associate Clinical Professor at UMass Boston. She has worked in geriatrics for over 20 years with clinical expertise in the care of the older adult including issues around end of life\, elder abuse\, and complex care management. Ms. Rowlands is a CPCS vendor.  \n Dr Rowlands will conduct an educational session on the clinical presentation and diagnosis of the various forms of dementia as well as cognitive impairment. She will explain how such conditions could interfere with a person’s ability to consent for elder services. In particular\, she will explain how environmental variables in the community\, risk factors and protective factors impact an older adult’s ability to meaningfully consent to an intervention by elder services. Participants will be provided with the necessary clinical information to zealously represent to clients in elder abuse cases. There will be 15 minutes for questions after the presentation. \n  \nOverview of Elder Protective Services: Eddie Murphy\, Protective Services Program Manager:  Noon-1:00 pm \n Presenter\, Eddie Murphy currently works for Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands as the Protective Services Program Manager. For the last 15 years\, prior to his current position\, he worked in several roles including Protective Services Worker\, Protective Services Supervisor\, and Nutrition Program Manager. He formerly worked in he worked in Adult Foster Care and Probation prior to joining ESCCI.  \nMr. Murphy will give a presentation on the various programs and services available at Elder Services and in particular the role of the Protective Services Program. He will explain the types of elder abuse cases that the agency investigates from intake to resolution of the case. Specifically\, he will explain the role of the agency in cases that involve litigation including but not limited to guardianship and conservatorship petitions and restraining orders. The participants will benefit from learning about the agency in general and in particular its role as   petitioner in the cases in which they may be appointed as Respondent’s Counsel.
