CAFL Staff Trial Attorney Positions

A CAFL staff trial attorney represents children and indigent parents, primarily in care and protection, child in need of services, and termination of parental rights cases in Juvenile Court, but also in cases in Probate and Family Court.  The duties of the CAFL trial attorney include:

  • Interviewing adult clients
  • Visiting and interviewing child clients
  • Pre-trial investigation and discovery, including locating and interviewing witnesses, reviewing documentary evidence, and consulting with service providers
  • Legal research and writing
  • Representing clients in pretrial proceedings, hearings, trials, and interlocutory appeals
  • Advocating for appropriate services for clients and other family members

All CAFL trial attorney positions require travel.  Access to reliable transportation throughout the state is necessary.  Fluency in a foreign language or in sign language and experience working on behalf of children and families in other disciplines (such as education, domestic violence, mental health, and immigration) is highly desirable.

A CAFL trial attorney must be committed to serving a culturally diverse, low-income population and must be eligible to practice law in Massachusetts, either as a member of the Massachusetts bar, as a law school graduate under Supreme Judicial Court Rule 3:03 or the student practice rule of another state, or as an attorney licensed in another jurisdiction who is covered by Supreme Judicial Court Rule 3:04.

The starting salary for an entry level CAFL staff trial attorney is $48,314.24 per year.
